hings That I Wanted To Do In South Dakota and How I've Done So Far:
There were a few things that I really wanted to do while in SD. Now, a few things that I knew I wasn't going to make, but they're on this list anyway. I guess I'll just have to come back some time, but in a group :)
The Stuff I Really Wanted to Do While In South Dakota:
Check-Wall Drug in Wall-This is the World's Biggest Tourist Trap. No joke. But kind of cool.
Check-The Badlands National Park-This was pretty neat. When we went to go see it as part of our Girl's Day Out Adventure (including Wall and Prairie Dog Ranch). It was raining buckets, and because of the rain, I think it looked even more awesome than normal.
-Wounded Knee-I think this seems like the most powerful and gut-wrenching sites in the country, and although I typically hate crying, this I want to see.
Check-The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs-Oh my gosh, was this cool. It was a working paleontological dig and makes me seriously question this whole archaeology thing in favor of paleontology...
-The Laura Ingalls Wilder House in De Smet-As an avid Little House fan, this is on my list of things to see someday.
-The Corn Palace in Mitchell-Billed as the "World's Only Corn Palace." Was there a contest? Does it ever get so hot that the corn starts to pop? These are some of the questions that burn in my mind. Plus, there are some great puns with this place.
Check-The Wild Horse Sanctuary in Hot Springs-A place where I can see and learn about the over 500 wild mustangs that run free in the Southern Black Hills; and because I'm in the tourism industry (twice over) I got a free tour. It was really amazing. Pictures pending.
Check-The Adams Museum and House-Love these two. Plus, I worked here. The Adams House is why I moved to SD.
Check-The Journey Museum in Rapid City-One of the most interesting museums I know of, this place has an archaeology section, a paleontology section, a section on the Wild West, a section on the Native Americans of the area, and a lot of really interesting history.
Check-Mount Rushmore National Monument-I don't know what to say about this, other than it's a requirement of being in Western South Dakota. And I felt so patriotic just being there.
-Belle Fouche-Center of the Nation- I feel like I need to check this out, just because it's the geographic center of the US.
-Mount Moriah-Hopefully, I'll hit this up this weekend. Since the Adams House is only a few blocks away, it'd be just pathetic if I missed this one. Wild Bill, Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock are buried up there.
-Storybook Island and Dinosaur Park-These shouldn't be on this list technically, but I'm intrigued by giant concrete dinosaurs and silly fairy-tale based statues. I think a group with a few cameras could be very entertained.
-National Music Museum- I found this while reading over my SD Vacation Guide that I studied between calls at Cen Res (I also went through with a pen and did editing and wrote a commentary, but that's beside the point). This looks like a great museum to me though, plus I love music. So, win.
