...You should be interested in at least the cool stuff inside the house, if not the history.
Something that I've noticed about being a tour guide is that some tours are really interested and care what you're saying. Others don't. This doesn't make sense to me. Why would you pay for a guided tour if you don't want to be there? I've had some tours that make me feel like what I'm doing isn't worth their time, and frankly, if they aren't engaged or interested in what I'm saying, it isn't worth anyone's time. I love the story that goes with this house, and I love telling it to people. It also makes me sad when I can't even make them smile (I said "train of thought derailed" again, I need to just keep that in my head) :)
Like, the other day I had a tour with just one guy, who informed me that the woodwork in the house was not hand-done; because no one can work with oak, it's too tough for anything but a machine to work with. Now, I don't pretend to be an expert on woodwork, but my Dad is a carpenter and he does work with oak. Also, I grew up watching This Old House and other such shows. And, the detail work on those pieces didn't come from a machine; you can't get detail like that with early machines. And even if they were ordered from a factory, they likely would have been hand-done anyway. Needless to say, these weren't thoughts that I could share on the tour, so they're here for your benefit.
That's the end of this mini-post here.
