I don't know if you've heard the biggest news or the most posted things on Facebook lately, but the mix is kind of weird.
First of all, the HMS Bounty sank of the coast of North Carolina. This is incredibly sad and tragic and while I didn't know anyone on board myself, I have friends who do/did. And we all want to know how the crew is. So there's that.
Also, the election is a big deal. I know, shocking.
Then we have Sandy, that terrible hurricane plaguing the East Coast and generally wrecking havoc. At least from what I can tell. People on the West Coast/Middle of the US are worried about friends and family on the East Coast, and the East Coasters are updating us that they're ok.
Then you have the the new news. Disney bought Star Wars (ok, they bought Lucas Films, but you all know what I mean). This one has a big following, some excited and some disgusted and mourning their childhoods. Maybe the selling of Star Wars is the last straw, that thing was always going to be awesome, ridiculous and slightly cheesy, but still AWESOME? Now, get ready for a Stitch and Han adventure! (Thanks Charles).
I think these three are all big on Facebook right now because, frankly, people need to decompress. No, that's not the word. People need a distraction. There's a lot of serious stuff going on right now that's having a major impact on everyone's life. So, I know I posted some funny things, or at least less tragic things, because I was sad, worried and just sad. And I wanted to think about other things.
Star Wars belonging to Disney is kind of a big deal, but come on. Sorry guys, there's more important stuff happening. But it's a nice distraction. And thinking about all those crossovers makes me laugh despite everything else.
People need to laugh. I think this is why there are so many silly animal pins on Pinterest; why sometimes people laugh when they're sad. It helps. I'm not saying that we should forget the tragic and serious stuff happening, but sometimes, distraction is good.

We're made to laugh. We're designed to be in a happy relationship with the Creator of the Universe (we goofed that up initially. God fixed that). But, laughing is something I think we're designed to do.
Maybe I'm weird (well, I know I'm weird, but maybe I'm weirder than I thought) but when tragedy strikes, after I've cried and know that I need to think of something else (and God tells me, did you talk to Me? Ok. Give it to Me and no take backs-though God doesn't use those words. I feel like that's the gist), I usually find comfort in a good belly laugh about something truly ridiculous. Or a cat whose head is in a cone. Because that's not ridiculous.
